The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – September 9th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there, Questers, and welcome back! Today is Wednesday, September 9th, and this is Episode 178. Today’s quote is, “To succeed in life, you need three things: A wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone.”

Shi:

This quote comes at you from Reba McEntire. She’s the American country singer, songwriter, actress, producer, and once a part of a family singing, sibling trio called, “The Singing McEntires.” And, I have always loved Reba. I love her show, I love her spunk, I love everything about her, and I was not surprised to see that this quote was attributed to her!

Kay:

It’s such a fun one, and she’s giving a success principle here in this tiny little quote when she says that you need these three things; the wishbone, the backbone, and the funny bone. So, let’s talk about the wishbone first! Now, have you ever held a wishbone in your hands and had the sibling on the opposite side of you, right after a big Thanksgiving meal? What is that feeling inside right before the bone cracks? It’s probably a little bit of hope…A little hope that you’ll get the bigger side, be able to make the wish, and it’ll be you, this year. In some families, this is a huge tradition. But, with that wishbone, what I think Reba is saying here, is that everyone, in order to succeed, needs a little hope!

Shi:

A little hope and a little dreaming, right? This is what it’s all about, is having something to work towards; a future, a dream, a goal, something that drives you, and inspires you, and excites you…That’s what the wishbone is all about! If we don’t have that in our body, we can tend to fall on the dull side of things, or we can tend to start to get a little pessimistic about things, because we put our eyes down and we’re not headed towards the stars, making wishes, and finding that hope, and looking for what it is that we can become, achieve, do, give, and leave behind when we’re done.

Kay:

And then, these last couple of weeks, we’ve talked a little bit about what Reba says here – which is that second thing that you need to be successful – and that’s that backbone, which is to ensure that you are training yourself to be strong enough to bear the burden of the blessings that you’re asking for. Now, a lot of people out there say to themselves, “I want to be famous. I want to be famous, I want people to know me, I want to be famous, I want to be out there, I want to make all the money. I want the cars, and the girls,” and whatever it is – most people have this desire to be famous. But, the reality is, many of the people who have that desire and then actually fulfill that desire to become famous, get onto the other side of that coin and realize it wasn’t everything they thought it was going to be…

Shi:

Well, you heard Kay say a phrase that we like to talk about a lot, and that’s, “To become strong enough to bear the burden of the blessings that we’re asking for.” This right here is helping us see how we can strengthen ourselves so that we have that strength when it comes, because it’s heavy!…The bigger the success you’re looking for, the bigger that dream is, the more strength it’s going to take, the more challenges you’re going to face, the more opposition you’re going to have, and all of those things require that backbone!

Kay:

So, if you’re not very strong, or if you haven’t been actively developing yourself to become a stronger person, you might come up against the weight of the things that you want in your life and find out, just like those people who became famous, that it might not be what you thought it was…

Shi:

All right, and on to that last bone that Reba tells us we need, which is the funny bone.

Kay:

Teeheehee.

Shi:

This is the bone that says, “You guys, you’re here and then you die, and there are billions of people on the planet and you get one shot at this.” We all take it just a little too seriously sometimes. Seeing the lighter side, the humorous side, the fun side, the delightful side, is some of that juice of life that we don’t want to miss, because it’s one of the very best parts. So, she reminds us here to see the lighter side, to find that delight, to indulge in the moment, and to not take yourself too seriously.

Kay:

The word that’s coming forward for me here is “whimsy.” Remember that life has whimsical things within it, and that, the more that you look for the whimsy in your life, the more whimsy will present itself to you. The brain, as a biological tool, just loves novelty…Not like novelty ice cream; I’m talking about novelty as in something new. Because, something that you haven’t seen before, sparks your imagination, and your physical brain cannot get enough of that! It wants to eat that right up. And so, finding ways to add novelty and whimsy into your life can help to keep you laughing and to keep you light, because – like Shi said – we only got one shot!

Shi:

Well, to remind you what Reba McEntire says, “To succeed in life, you need three things: A wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone.”

Kay:

All right, guys! So – today’s quest is a bone quest.

Shi:

Bone zone!

Kay:

Which bone could you personally benefit from building just a little bit? Today’s quest is to take at least one action toward developing your wishbone, your backbone, or your funny bone. Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
