The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap - October 9th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there Questers, and welcome to a very special episode of The Mentorship Quest! It's October 9th and this is Episode 200.

Shi:

Which means we have a very appropriate, 200th episode quote, (at least it's appropriate for The Mentorship Quest!), and it comes to you from Wayne Dyer, one of our most favorite teachers! And, he says, “When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor, it's to enjoy each step along the way.”

Kay:

Well, if you have yet to be introduced to the late Dr Wayne Dyer, he is an incredible teacher. I think it's been about seven years now since he passed away. And he was an incredible mentor. I feel like it's almost weird to say that because he had such an influence on spiritual teaching, but he still totally is.

Shi:

Oh my gosh well he's an author, he was a motivational speaker, and we certainly grew up with him on his PBS specials. He was kind of their motivational guide that they would bring in and talk about metaphysical things and bettering your life. And I'll always remember, (Kay, I know you will too), laying on the hardwood floors at the old house and seeing Dyer on Sunday afternoons. But this quote I think really helps to point us back into that, “you got to enjoy the journey” message that is so important and yet so easily dismissed. And putting it in the metaphor of a dance is such a great way to understand really what that purpose is. Because, it's not about checking the box - if you are a task completer or box checker which I am. I am talking to you right now because when you get out on the floor and you dance, the point isn't to check the box to dance...it's to DO the dance!

Kay:

I would like to just put a caveat in here because I was just thinking to myself, "Well there really isn't a dance out there that's about box checking." And then, I thought of our dear sweet loving Megan Jensen who absolutely loves country line dancing. So, for those of you who are box checkers, country line dancing might be great for you because that is a box checking kind of dance. But, even while you're checking the boxes you're enjoying yourself because it's kind of impossible not to when you're dancing. One of the reasons that it's impossible not to enjoy yourself while your dancing is because it's pretty hard to force somebody to actually dance. And so, if you're dancing, chances are you're probably enjoying yourself already just by being on the dance floor.

Shi:

That's a great point to bring up. If somebody really just doesn't want to dance they're not even going to put themselves in the situation to then take steps. Or they will - but they'll be rather uncomfortable about it and typically you can feel that energy on the dance floor. Kay and I both love to dance, we love to boogie, and we love to move, and it really is about enjoying the song. When your jam comes on, you are sad, and - when it is over - you’re like, "Hey DJ keep playing that song on and on and on, ALL night long." Because you love it and you just want to keep boogieing across the floor!

Kay:

One of my favorite stories that came back from my best friend of her time in Germany was the year that song Duck Sauce - if you can remember when that became popular.

Shi:

Barbara Streisand.

Kay:

Exactly. So, apparently the entire country of Germany became completely obsessed with this singular song. And, she said she went to a disco one night and when she got there at midnight they were playing the song. And, when she left at 6:00 AM they were STILL playing the song. But life is a lot like that right? Sometimes we collectively play a song or a song gets played in a situation that maybe you're not comfortable with, or you don't know the territory, or you're not sure. But, you find yourself dancing along anyway, and the point is - if you put yourself out on that dance floor - you're not going to rigidly walk to the other side. And even if you want to get to the other side of the dance floor and other people are dancing, what do you see people do in the movies as they're going through? They kind of like bop and boogie through the dance floor. You don't just beeline through. And, if you do, everyone who's already on the floor notices you really quick. So, it's not necessarily about making that beeline for the other side, but finding the time to dance along along the way!

Shi:

Well, in this quote he says your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor and that’s because the purpose is the reason for which something exists. So, it doesn't mean that you can't get on the dance floor and do other things. But, when you dance, the purpose of dancing, and the reason it exists, is to enjoy each step along the way. So, for our 200th episode, we would like to do something a little bit different with you. On today's quest, and just to remind you before we get to that, what our quote from today was. It's from Wayne Dyer who says, "When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor, it's to enjoy each step along the way."

Kay:

All righty gang that means today is a dance quest. We want you to take 15 seconds with us - right here, right now - and let's boogie together!

Shi:

Uptown funk you up, uptown funk you up. Uptown funk you up!

Kay:

Uptown funk you up.

Shi:

You know.

Kay:

Thank you guys so much - that was so fun! What an awesome day. Thank you for being with us for 200 full episodes. This has been an incredible journey with all of you, and we can't wait to keep it going as we dance into our future. Are you ready?
