The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap - May 27th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Welcome, one and all, to The Mentorship Quest with Kay and Shi! We've got Episode 103 coming at you today, with a quote from one of our favorite, favorite mentors, Mr. Tony Robbins!

Shi:

He says, "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten."

Kay:

Ooh, what a succinct way to say such a profound teaching!

Shi:

Well, it's practical. It's easy to understand. It's little indigestible, and yet, it's power PACKED!

Kay:

Well, I mean, the habits that we do daily build up the quality of the life that we live. And so, if you've done the things that you've always done and you're looking at your life and you're asking, "Why isn't it different than what I want it to be?" Well guys, here's the secret: You got to do new things in order to get new results!

Shi:

Right? You can literally just look at your life and assess what you've done in the past in order to get where you are. Now, of course, you live in an environment with other circumstances, and things, and people. But, you are where you are now, because of where you've steered yourself in the past. And so, what you've been doing has gotten you where you are. And, Tony is telling us, in order to GET somewhere different, we've got to DO something different.

Kay:

Well, one of the gifts of having a human brain is that it is fascinated by new things. It loves novelty. I mean, just think about it! If you were to see a color that you've never experienced before, in front of your eyes right now...I mean, your mind would be BLOWN! You would tell everybody, and you would talk all about it. I mean, it's the same sort of thing when you find a new restaurant in town that you love…

Shi:

Or a new shop, or a great vacation! When we experience something new, it really just highlights our human need for curiosity. And, you get that when you're a kid, right? You remember being a kid and just being curious about e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, AND particular things - which hopefully have helped lead you through your life! But, cultivating that sense of curiosity, wonder, of seeking out new things, and of looking to expand and grow...it's what we're all about! So, we can take that and use it to our advantage. And, maybe change some of the things that we've been doing in order to get some new things!

Kay:

Because, some of those old things that we were doing are leading us to the conditions and the circumstances that we have today. And, maybe you love your life how it is today...and, if you do, that's awesome! Keep doing whatever you're doing. But, if you have little places that have room for improvement, or maybe BIG places that have room for improvement, you have to do new actions and new habits in order to get those new results!

Shi:

Totally. And I think all of us would say we love our lives, right? I know I love my life, and it's awesome! But, sometimes, even the smallest of shifts make the experience so much better, and enlighten us to new ways of being. And, just being able to keep your brain tickled...that's a great experience! And, it feels good when you're excited about something, and you're doing it because you really, genuinely want to do it. I mean, we've all been there. Whether you've learned a new skill, or you fell in love, or you've started a new job...that newness is exciting!

Kay:

Well, the newness doesn't just serve as a place for excitement and fun. It also serves as a space of growth! Because, everything that makes us grow...everything that adds to what we already are...also adds new things to your wholeness as a human! So, if we want to grow, we have to do new stuff!

Shi:

And, that can be uncomfortable. You're probably relating with this pattern...being excited about the newness...but then uncomfortable with the growth and new habits that you have to start - because you’ve never taken action on them before!

Kay:

Yeah! And when you get the result that you set out for, (that you had to do the new thing in order to get), it is easy to look at it and say, "Yeah, I want that", while not remembering that there's all this “in between” of new experiences and uncomfortable growth. All of which, you have to go through in order to get to that end result.

Shi:

I know something for me right now is: every week when that weekly report comes out about my phone, I'm really not happy with the number. I do a lot of work from my phone, and I can justify it to myself all day long. But I also know, deep down, that there's room for improvement there. I go between three and a half and four and a half hours every week on my daily average, and I think that's just too much for me. I don't need to do that. I should either work on my computer (if I'm doing work), or use my phone minimally. So, that's something that I can see, where I continue to do what I always do, and I'm getting what I've always got.

Kay:

You know, in the first couple of weeks of the pandemic shutdown, I got a notification on my phone that was like, "Um, you are spending higher than normal volume on your phone."

Shi:

And, meanwhile, our watches are going, "You are spending a lot less time moving than you used to."

Kay & Shi:

*(Laughter)*

Kay:

I mean, it's hard! We moved into a digital workspace. And, we had to become flexible so quickly. But, I think a lot of us have experienced this forced newness while having to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic. And, we've all been forced into newness in our society. This generation has never done this before. And so, it's very different. And, while novelty and newness can also go in the good way, it 100% of the time makes us GROW. But, if we were to do what we've always done in this time of great sickness, and if everybody didn't stay home or take those precautionary actions, we would have gotten what they got in 1918 with the Spanish influenza...and we would have seen many more people affected.

Shi:

So everyone's in this forced change, and forced newness, right now. And, that means that we're not doing what we've always done! So, that also means we're going to start seeing new results and getting new things like...more time on your phone! So, to remind you, today's quote was from Tony Robbins, who says, "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten."

Kay:

And, today's quest is to: Do something you've never done before! Now, you might think that you've done all the things that you can possibly do, but just REALLY think about it. Have you ever been on TikTok or watched a Justin Bieber music video? Have you ever done an online yoga class or guided meditation on Spotify? Have you ever made eye contact with your neighbor and struck up a conversation? I know I haven't! There are plenty of things available to try. So get out there today, and try something new!

Shi:

Yeah! Happy Questing!
