The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – July 27th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Welcome, once again, to The Mentorship Quest! Today is Monday, July 27th, and this is Episode 146. We’ve got a short quote, but a good quote for you today from The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia, who says, “No treasure is worth dying for.”

Shi:

Oh, come on! You can do a better Geralt than that…Let’s hear it!

Kay:

*(In Geralt’s voice) “No treasure is worth dying for.”

Kay & Shi:

*(Laughter)*

Shi:

Yes! And then, he would probably do some kind of a Geralt grunt.

Kay & Shi:

*(Grunt)*

Shi:

We love The Witcher! If you have no idea what the heck we are talking about, this is a series on Netflix based on a book series – and then a game series – and now a T.V. show series! It is a story about an ancient land of magic, and wizards, and all kinds of things. And, Geralt happens to be a type of magic made person called a “Witcher” that goes out and hunts beasts for coins.

Kay:

And, in his quest of hunting beasts for coin, he encounters several different characters. One of the characters that we just love so, SO much creates a song for the Witcher, which, much to his chagrin, becomes a very popular tale and ends up making Geralt of Rivia very popular throughout his land, in the show. And, the song goes…

Kay & Shi:

*(Singing)*…”Toss a coin to your Witcher – oh Valley of Plenty!”

Kay:

So, this song is a great way of setting us up for diving into the quote that, “No treasure is worth dying for.”

Shi:

Well, it’s an apt time to be talking about this because there’s a lot of treasure to go after. And, there’s a lot of avenues to that treasure that might take your life. And, oftentimes, the integris path to the treasure that you seek is the longest, and hardest, and most arduous of all. So, it can be easy to look for those side cuts, but taking the path that doesn’t kill you is probably the best path towards your treasure!

Kay:

We’re not just talking about “kill you” in the physical sense, but what about the killing of your values, or the killing of your dream, or the killing of your happiness, or your relationships, or any one of those things? Because, NO treasure, and no physical thing in this world, is worth allowing those intrinsic values and the things that truly make you happy to die in the process of gaining…

Shi:

Well, you think about how we in our culture often talk about “setting the goal” and “achieving the goal” and “do anything” for the goal…Just work harder, just sweat more, just grind it, just get up earlier, and just sacrifice for that goal! And so, we can easily start to confuse the message with “treasure is worth dying for”, and, as Kay said, we’re not just talking about dying physically, (like the Witchers are coming after you), but to die emotionally, or die spiritually, or even to let your body decay over time in pursuit of treasure. Certainly during the COVID days, and quarantine days, we’ve seen all kinds of different ways that we can interpret this phrase.

Kay:

Well, we have said all throughout the shutdowns that we are always willing to comply with safety measures – be it masks for our guests, or be it having to be socially distant, or maybe only to-go orders or curbside…We’ve been saying since the beginning, that if our business has to die to save actual lives, that it would be worth it. Because, if you were to ask any one person who has lost a dear loved one to COVID-19, what would you pay to have that person back? They would probably say anything…

Shi:

Yeah. And, to see it happening in the hundreds of thousands across the globe is just heartbreaking to know all of those stories that are there. And, some of those deaths aren’t preventable, but some of them are – through measures that we all take together. And, remembering that human life and the human happiness of our species overall is not worth dying for, means that any kind of economic or short term treasure is just NOT worth it. And, speaking of short term treasure, there’s actually a coin crisis happening right now!

Kay:

Right? So, I think that we all just tossed one too many coins to the Witcher, and now there are no coins!

Kay & Shi:

*(Laughter)*

Kay:

But, if you haven’t been to a bank recently, you might not know that there is a coin shortage going on in the U.S. right now – just because there isn’t enough of a flow of actual currency happening. So, it’s an interesting thing to see happen. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the signs up that say, “Coin shortage…Please turn in your coins!” but it’s just an interesting, cool thing going on in our country right now!

Shi:

We all have that bucket at home that you can imagine right now. You know, that bucket where – when you get a penny out of the dryer – it goes into that certain bucket. So, if we all just take our buckets in, we should be just fine! And, unless you’re in an industry like we are in the restaurant industry, you might not have even encountered the fact that there is a coin crisis! But, of course, in a restaurant, you’ve got a cash drawer, and so we often have to go to the bank and get coins. So, just another new, interesting challenge that 2020 has presented to us! But, to remind you of what Geralt of Rivia said from The Witcher, “No treasure is worth dying for.”

Kay:

Okay, well – you guys know it…Today’s quest is a coin quest! And, the challenge is to: Go toss a coin to your Witcher! And, that can mean sharing any form of treasure, or tossing a coin to someone or something that deserves it. Maybe throw a penny in a fountain, or maybe take those coins into the bank and exchange it for some cash…Because, Hey!…Toss a coin to your local bank and help out the coin crisis! Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
